The Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme is available to support children and families living in regional and rural areas. The various accommodation options currently available to families at the RCH will continue to be available at the new hospital. A subsidy is provided to approved patients and carers (escorts) to assist in the cost of travel and accommodation to the nearest specialist medical service that is more than 50km from the patient’s nearest hospital. An application form must be forwarded to the hospital nearest to the patient’s place of residence. These hospitals are responsible for all aspects of patient travel, and inquiries regarding the subsidy should be directed to these facilities. For more information and application forms, see health.qld.gov.au/ptss/ Will family accommodation be available at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital? All children who stay overnight or for an extended period of time will be able to have a parent or carer stay with them. The majority of rooms in the new children’s hospital will be single rooms with an en suite and built-in bed for a parent or carer. Two-, three-, and four-bed rooms will also have an en suite and a place at the bedside for a parent or carer to stay. Ten single rooms will be available on level fi ve for parents and carers in special circumstances, such as those who may have a child in a critical condition. Each room will have access to a shared parent lounge, kitchenette and bathroom facilities. Two rooms will have en suites, one with disabled access. Land on Vulture Street (opposite the hospital) has been earmarked for a new accommodation facility for families from regional and rural areas. This short and longer term accommodation is expected to be similar to what is currently available close to the RCH and MCH. Negotiations are continuing with the Ronald McDonald House charity to provide this new family accommodation. The existing Ronald McDonald House at Herston, and other accommodation providers such as Leonard Lodge , the Childhood Cancer Support Service (both located at Herston) and the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland ESA Village (located at Boggo Road Urban Village) will also continue to support patients and families.
