GPS19 approach into KPEO. Its rare as an instrument rated - TopicsExpress

GPS19 approach into KPEO. Its rare as an instrument rated recreational pilot to fly an approach for real, and even rarer to take it to almost minimums. Often times, when its instrument weather its also unflyable due to icing or thunderstorms, or whatever. The minimum for this approach is a barometric altitude of 1,400 ft (500 feet above ground) with a visibility of one mile. Vis was excellent, but reported ceiling was 900 ft above the ground, meaning 400 ft to spare. You can see at one point we are still in the clouds at 1,700 ft, and we saw the airport at 1,600, which was 200 feet above minimum. You can see the moving map on the GPS with the course line at one point. Every instrument approach has a missed approach procedure, which is what you do if you get to minimums and cant land. Executing the missed helps to have fun another day. Trying to suck it up and duck under the minimum hoping it will all work out often contributes to things not ending well.
