This is one of my favorite passages of The Book of Earth = The Urantia Book. Embarking at Tarentum 133:2.1 While tarrying at the ship landing, waiting for the boat to unload cargo, the travelers observed a man mistreating his wife. As was his custom, Jesus intervened in behalf of the person subjected to attack. He stepped up behind the irate husband and, tapping him gently on the shoulder, said: “My friend, may I speak with you in private for a moment?” The angry man was nonplused by such an approach and, after a moment of embarrassing hesitation, stammered out — “er — why — yes, what do you want with me?” When Jesus had led him to one side, he said: “My friend, I perceive that something terrible must have happened to you; I very much desire that you tell me what could happen to such a strong man to lead him to attack his wife, the mother of his children, and that right out here before all eyes. I am sure you must feel that you have some good reason for this assault. What did the woman do to deserve such treatment from her husband? As I look upon you, I think I discern in your face the love of justice if not the desire to show mercy. I venture to say that, if you found me out by the wayside, attacked by robbers, you would unhesitatingly rush to my rescue. I dare say you have done many such brave things in the course of your life. Now, my friend, tell me what is the matter? Did the woman do something wrong, or did you foolishly lose your head and thoughtlessly assault her?” It was not so much what he said that touched this man’s heart as the kindly look and the sympathetic smile which Jesus bestowed upon him at the conclusion of his remarks. Said the man: “I perceive you are a priest of the Cynics, and I am thankful you restrained me. My wife has done no great wrong; she is a good woman, but she irritates me by the manner in which she picks on me in public, and I lose my temper. I am sorry for my lack of self-control, and I promise to try to live up to my former pledge to one of your brothers who taught me the better way many years ago. I promise you.” 133:2.2 And then, in bidding him farewell, Jesus said: “My brother, always remember that man has no rightful authority over woman unless the woman has willingly and voluntarily given him such authority. Your wife has engaged to go through life with you, to help you fight its battles, and to assume the far greater share of the burden of bearing and rearing your children; and in return for this special service it is only fair that she receive from you that special protection which man can give to woman as the partner who must carry, bear, and nurture the children. The loving care and consideration which a man is willing to bestow upon his wife and their children are the measure of that man’s attainment of the higher levels of creative and spiritual self-consciousness. Do you not know that men and women are partners with God in that they co-operate to create beings who grow up to possess themselves of the potential of immortal souls? The Father in heaven treats the Spirit Mother of the children of the universe as one equal to himself. It is Godlike to share your life and all that relates thereto on equal terms with the mother partner who so fully shares with you that divine experience of reproducing yourselves in the lives of your children. If you can only love your children as God loves you, you will love and cherish your wife as the Father in heaven honors and exalts the Infinite Spirit, the mother of all the spirit children of a vast universe.” 133:2.3 As they went on board the boat, they looked back upon the scene of the teary-eyed couple standing in silent embrace. Having heard the latter half of Jesus’ message to the man, Gonod was all day occupied with meditations thereon, and he resolved to reorganize his home when he returned to India. 133:2.4 The journey to Nicopolis was pleasant but slow as the wind was not favorable. The three spent many hours recounting their experiences in Rome and reminiscing about all that had happened to them since they first met in Jerusalem. Ganid was becoming imbued with the spirit of personal ministry. He began work on the steward of the ship, but on the second day, when he got into deep religious water, he called on Joshua to help him out. En Español. El Embarque en Tarento 133:2.1 Mientras aguardaban en el embarcadero, esperando que el barco descargara, los viajeros observaron a un hombre que maltrataba a su mujer. Como era su costumbre, Jesús intervino en favor de la persona agredida. Se acercó a espaldas del iracundo marido, y tocándole suavemente el hombro dijo: «Amigo mío, ¿me permites que te hable en privado un instante?» El airado marido, desconcertado, tartamudeó después de un momento de titubeo: «¿Eh? ¿Por qué? Sí. ¿Qué quieres de mí?» Jesús le llevó aparte, diciéndole: «Amigo mío, percibo que te ocurrió algo grave; mucho deseo que me expliques qué pudo suceder para que un hombre fuerte como tú ataque así a su mujer, a la madre de sus hijos, aquí, a la vista de todo el mundo. Seguramente crees que hay una buena razón para este asalto. ¿Qué hizo esta mujer para merecer semejante trato de su marido? Te observo y creo discernir en tu rostro el amor por la justicia, si no el deseo de ser misericordioso. Me atrevo a decir que, si tú me encontraras a la vera del camino, a la merced de un grupo de asaltantes, no titubearías ni un instante, correrías a rescatarme. Me atrevería a decir incluso que has realizado muchas de estas acciones valientes en el curso de tu vida. Ahora bien, amigo mío, dime ¿qué pasa? ¿Es que tu mujer hizo algo malo, o es que tú perdiste la cabeza tontamente agrediéndola sin pensar?» No fue tanto lo que Jesús le dijo sino su bondadosa mirada y su compasiva sonrisa lo que conmovió el corazón de este hombre, el cual respondió: «Supongo que eres un sacerdote de los cínicos, y te agradezco que me hayas frenado. Mi mujer no ha cometido ningún gran mal; es una buena mujer, pero me irrita porque se la agarra conmigo en público, me saca de quicio. Lamento mi falta de autodominio y prometo tratar de cumplir mi promesa de antaño ante uno de tus hermanos, quien me enseñó la senda más alta hace ya muchos años. Te lo prometo.» 133:2.2 Al decirle adiós continuó Jesús: «Hermano mío, recuerda siempre que el hombre no tiene ninguna autoridad legítima sobre la mujer a menos que ésta le haya concedido voluntariamente tal autoridad. Tu esposa se ha comprometido a recorrer contigo el trayecto de la vida, a ayudarte en las luchas, y a asumir el mayor peso en la crianza de tus hijos; a cambio de este servicio especial es justo que reciba de ti esa protección especial que el hombre puede dar a la mujer, a la compañera que concibe, da a luz y nutre a los hijos. La solicitud y la consideración que un hombre está dispuesto a conceder a su esposa y a sus hijos son la medida por la cual conoce el alcance de los niveles más altos de su autoconciencia espiritual y creativa. ¿No sabes acaso que los hombres y las mujeres son los socios de Dios, en el sentido de que cooperan para crear seres que crecen y que llegan también a poseer el potencial de un alma inmortal? El Padre celestial trata a la Madre Espíritu de los hijos del universo como su igual. Convivir tu vida y todo lo que en la vida está contenido, en términos de igualdad con la compañera y madre que tan plenamente comparte contigo esa experiencia divina de reproduciros en las vidas de vuestros hijos, es una acción casi divina. Si puedes amar a tus hijos como Dios te ama a ti, amarás y apreciarás a tu esposa como el Padre en el cielo honra y exalta al Espíritu Infinito, la madre de todos los hijos espirituales de un vasto universo». 133:2.3 Al subir a bordo, se volvieron para contemplar la escena de la pareja abrazada, en silencio, con lágrimas en los ojos. Habiendo oído la última parte del mensaje de Jesús al hombre, Gonod pasó el día entero discurriéndolo, y decidió que reorganizaría su hogar cuando regresara a la India. 133:2.4 La travesía a Nicópolis fue agradable pero lenta, porque el viento no era favorable. Los tres pasaron muchas horas reviviendo sus experiencias en Roma y recordando todo lo que les había sucedido desde que se conocieron en Jerusalén. Ganid estaba siendo imbuido con el espíritu del ministerio personal. Se dedicó al despensero del barco, pero al segundo día, al encontrarse cada vez más enredado en problemas religiosos, llamó a Josué en su socorro. (1471.4) 133:2.5 Pasaron varias días en Nicópolis, la ciudad que había fundado Augusto unos cincuenta años antes en conmemoración de la batalla de Actium, llamándola «la ciudad de la victoria», pues en este sitio había acampado su ejército antes de la batalla. Se hospedaron en la casa de un tal Jerami, un prosélito griego de la fe judía, a quien habían conocido a bordo del barco. El apóstol Pablo pasó todo el invierno con el hijo de Jerami en la misma casa en el curso de su tercer viaje misionero. Desde Nicópolis, navegaron en el mismo barco hasta Corinto, la capital de la provincia romana de Acaya.
