GRAMBLING RAMBLING: TO BE EXACT! Yesterday I posted about a lie I told when I was asked if I saw race when I looked at a person. I said, “No” when to be honest I should have said, “Yes.” However, in thinking about this I realize that the first thing I see is not race, but color. Then, almost immediately I assign a race based on the color I see. So, unlike the individual with whom I was having the conversation, I take two mental steps as opposed to her one. So why is this important? Because first and foremost I want to ensure I am the person I want to be. But there is another reason. I really think race or ethnic group should not be used when what is needed is a physical identification. I have talked to only two people about this, and both have looked at me like, “You must be kidding.” But I am not. I am an African American, a black person. You need to identify me when I come out of the train station. What color am I? Exactly! You have no way of knowing. So there is no need to use my race in any physical description of me. And if there is no need to use it, then dont.
