GRAPHIC NOVELIST GETS GENIUS GRANT: Cartoonist and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel has just been named as one of 21 recipients of the MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant. She is the first woman cartoonist and graphic novelist to receive the prestigious honor. (Ben Katchor was the first cartoonist to snag the “genius” grant in 2000.) You can check out her graphic novels through the Pasadena Public Library, including “Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama” (2012) and “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic” (2006). Also in circulation is “The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For” (2008), a collection of Bechdel’s comic strips, described by Publishers Weekly as chronicling “the lives of a tight-knit group of lesbian friends over an astounding 21 years of life, work, love, boredom, political activism and countless reversals of fortune.”
