Job Description: The Center for Native Grasslands Management at the University of Tennessee is in search of 9 technicians who will assist with grassland/early successional bird monitoring from early May to approximately early August. Technicians will be based at one of three locations (Scott City, KS; Hiwassee, TN; Cambridge Springs, PA). There will be some flexibility in choice of location, but final assignment will depend on level of experience with grassland bird monitoring and need. Review of applications begins immediately and continues until filled. Job duties include conducting distance-based surveys for grassland and early successional birds, vegetation sampling, insect sampling, and data entry. Qualifications: The ideal candidates should be familiar with grassland/early successional bird identification by sight and sound (species vary by site but may include dickcissel, bobolink, field sparrow, eastern or western meadowlark, grasshopper sparrow, Cassin’s sparrow, savannah sparrow, red-winged blackbird); distance sampling methodology; nest searching techniques and identification; insect sampling; and basic vegetation identification. Preference will be given to candidates with proven bird identification and nest searching experience and skill. Ideal candidate should be comfortable working long days in the field during hot summer months, and energetic and excited about applied avian conservation research. These data are being collected to assess the differences between switchgrass biofuel grass fields, and region-specific typical grass fields. A BS in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, or related field is preferred. Candidates should bring their own binoculars. To Apply: Electronic applications are preferred.
