GRATEFUL!! that asteroid 2014 HQ124 will not be hitting Earth today. The 1,100 foot long chunk of rock that was only discovered 6 weeks ago will miss us by 3 times the distance to the Moon. Traveling at 31,000 miles per hour, an impact would be equivalent to an hydrogen bomb and likely be at least as devastating as the Tunguska event, which knocked down 80 million trees over an 800 square mile impact zone in 1908. Such an impact near any major metropolitan area would erase the landscape, killing as many as 20 million people.
