GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS The LORDS loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassion(s) never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, says my soul, Therefore I have hope in Him.… (Lamentations 3:22-23) Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with thee; Thou change-st not, thy compassion(s), they fail not; As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be. Refrain: Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided; Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!” (Thomas O. Chisholm – United Methodist Hymnal 140) A phrase in Lamentations 3:22-23 provides a basis for the refrain: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Stanza one emphasizes God’s unchanging nature: . . there is no shadow of turning with thee;/thou change-st not, thy compassion(s) they fail not. Perhaps James 1:17 provides the scriptural basis for this concept: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
