GREAT REVIEW! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars A charming homage to the South, March 21, 2014 By Diana F. (Buenos Aires, Argentina) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(Whats this?) This review is from: A Southern Boys Meanderings (Kindle Edition) G.C. Smith lives in the lovely city of Beaufort in South Carolina and, like many poets of all times who found inspiration in the surrounding landscape, he honors in this collection of well-crafted poems the Southern land, its marshes, the sea, its people and creatures. The blue sky of the Carolinas which can easily turn into the darkest of hurricanes and the water in all of its forms are the main characters in the series bout Weather; the animal life-eagles, ospreys, hummingbirds, cardinals; bass and marley; snakes and lizards--shows up in the series bout Fishin an Critters an Stuff in which fishing, as a pleasurable human activity, creates a link to the last two sections, bout Livin the Good Life--an elegy to the sweet life in the Lowcountry--and `bout Pretty Ladies, because the South wouldnt be the South without its Belles of all colors, to whom the poet pays great attention, as it should be. The joy for living, the goodness in the communion with Nature--even when Nature misbehaves--and the respect for all that breathes and moves finds an easy, organic place in what feels like a tale of a well-lived life. A life in which theres even room and leisure to face the unavoidable future death and plan for an epitaph: He Came; He Went. He did no Harm. To be fair, one would request a third line to be added: He wrote well. Since the South embraces a lot more than just one State, the collection ends with a present, the Lagniappe, that little extra which compliments the reader, and Lousiana--with its people, Cajun dialect, the spicy recipes, and the love for a good, lazy, pleasurable life--features as a guest of honor. Because of its sound and its meaning, this collection is pleasant to both ear and heart, the spirit of this beautiful region being channeled with unsurpassable grace by the gentleman poet G.C. Smith. A must-read for all the lovers and citizens of the South.
