GREEN CANTALOUPES Surrounded by a sea of concrete and asphalt, - TopicsExpress

GREEN CANTALOUPES Surrounded by a sea of concrete and asphalt, I stared at a winding wave of glowing red tail lights in front of me on Lubbock’s crowded South Loop 289 early yesterday morning, just before sunrise. Hearing and watching the passing cars zoom by me, I clutched the wheel so that my knuckles turned white. As I exited off the loop, I felt the tension leave my shoulders and I relaxed a bit. I found myself consumed with thoughts of work…then I began thinking about my first job - I was 13 years old I started working at the little Coyote Store in Gail, Texas. I waited tables, cooked and cleaned, ran the register…Although I was on a long stretch of highway, miles away…my mind and my heart visited our little store…I remembered what is sounded like to drop baskets of frozen french fries into hot grease. I smiled thinking about different faces, and how even today, twenty years later, I can still remember how different, regular customers wanted their cheeseburgers fixed in their own way. I thought about how good one of my grandmother’s homemade breakfast burritos would taste. I got to where I was going and tucked my memories aside. I’ve been deep in thought the past few days about how years have brought about a lot of changes…to our little store, and all of our lives…about how I’d gone from running barefooted down hot dirt paths chasing horny toads...to filling empty sugar shakers in a quiet country store and on to flyin’ by the seat of my business casuals around packed, a busy freeway.. I refocused on my current job and put in a hard day’s work..anyway, when I got back to Post I went and bought some more green cantaloupes..and they were good.
