GREEN PARTY IN NORTHERN IRELAND ELECTS NEW DEPUTY LEADER The Green Party in Northern Ireland has elected Clare Bailey as its Deputy Leader. At the party’s annual EGM held in Bangor at the weekend, Ms Bailey was elected unanimously to the position of Deputy Leader. Green Party Leader Steven Agnew MLA said: “I am delighted to welcome Clare Bailey as Deputy Leader and look forward to working closely with her as the party continues to grow in terms of supporter numbers and electoral success. “In the last election, the Green Party in Northern Ireland doubled our representation on Council and in the last year we have seen a huge increase in the number of people joining us. “This has naturally lead to an increased workload for everyone in the team which we welcome as it means more people want to see Green representation in Northern Ireland as an antidote to the failure of traditional parties which have shown to be incapable of working together for the common good. Chair of the Green Party in Northern Ireland Jenny Muir said: “Clare has proved herself an excellent candidate and has been working hard to expand the appeal of the party and especially to encourage more women to become involved in local politics. “This is a policy area that we as a party are very proud to support and we have already agreed quotas for candidates and strong targets to encourage more female representation. “Our party membership is almost equal in terms of male and female members and Clare’s unanimous election to Deputy Leader sends out a strong message that the Green Party is a party where women are welcomed and valued. “Speaking just after her election Clare Bailey said: “To be an active member of a political party in Northern Ireland was a big decision for me. “The Green Party was the only real party of choice for me. I felt that I could join this Party and still be me - a mother, a feminist, a woman looking for an alternative politics to support and for my life experience to be included in, to influence policy and encourage others to do the same. “For to long politics here was exclusive, it encouraged the majority to not get involved. “I believe Northern Ireland needs the Green Party as the alternative to show there is a different way of doing politics. It needs us to continue to provide an integrated sustainable vision of what Northern Ireland can be for the new generation and for me that is worth getting involved with and that is worth fighting for. “As Deputy Leader I want to support and help build on the great work and achievements made by Steven Agnew. He is doing a great job as MLA and Party Leader and continues to inspire and grow the party and I want to play a prominent role in that continuing success.”
