GREEN SANCTUARY COMMITTEE—GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH BUY LOCAL FOOD -THIS SUMMER AND YEAR ROUND We are so lucky to have an abundance of farm fresh food available at local farm stands and farmers’ markets here in southeast Massachusetts. Some of you are already taking advantage of this abundance by participating in a CSA (community supported agriculture), which allows you to purchase a share of the bounty of a local farm. If you aren’t in a CSA or haven’t gotten into the habit of shopping at one of the many farm stands in Bridgewater and surrounding towns, before you buy vegetables and fruits at a grocery store this summer, STOP and consider what might be available from local farms. Why have your food dollars go to large international corporations that ship produce to our supermarkets from around the world when you could be supporting a small, local business? If that’s not reason enough, the freshest, just picked produce is found at the farm stand. You can buy more than just fruits and vegetables on your trip to the farm stand or farmers market---fresh eggs (from non-industrial chickens) are also available from local producers along with honey, maple syrup, flowers and bedding plants. Meat, fish and cheese are available at some markets. Even better news – shopping local is not just summertime fun anymore. Now you can buy all sorts of local food year round at an indoor farmers’ market held every Saturday morning in Easton (Route 138, 719 Washington Street at Simpson Springs). Let’s take back control of our food supply rather than leaving it in the hands of international agribusiness! Ask a member of the Green Sanctuary Committee to take you with them on their next visit to the farmer’s market. If you want to find out where you can find a farm stand or farmers market and what items are available there check out this web site:
