GREENER WAY, A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE BUSiNESS The other day I (Dorji Tashi, Lodens ED) visited Greener Way office in Thimphu and met with these three inspiring personnel who have been tirelessly working for Bhutan’s first waste management company. Karma Yonten is the CEO and the founder of this company. Since its inception the company has grown incrementally both in terms of strength and popularity. All three of them (Karma, Dorji and Subash Sharma) have academically achieved at least bachelor’s degree from India and abroad. Karma is by nature enterprising. He worked for quite a few companies in attractive positions but he finally settled with this business, which I must say is a brilliant decision. His wife and friends open-handedly joined him to support the much-needed venture in the country. Subash who recently returned from Australia with a masters degree in business was offered a job with an attractive remuneration (for his combined knowledge of ‘engineering and business management) but he politely refused and continue to work for Greener Way. It applies to other colleagues too! I was amazed by their ironic determination and passions to take their business to a next stage. This business has in many ways become socially responsible. 1.Firstly they strictly adhere to law of the land and operate their business ethically which are crucial elements of socially responsible business. 2.The more business they do, cleaner the city looks like which is important for all leaving creatures. 3.By keeping the city clean, we are protected from various diseases and improve our health as we get fresh air and clean water. 4.It directly contributes to the betterment of our environment, which is the top priority for Bhutan. They recycle almost all waste items such as plastic bottles, rubbers, irons, electric wires, papers etc. 5.Employs over 30 people most of whom are form economically challenged backgrounds. The benefit reaches beyond the individual employee to their children, parents and relatives. 6.As far as I know, Karma has become a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs. In a small society like ours, role models make a huge difference. 7.The company also conducts numerous advocacy programmes in university colleges and schools on crucial topics such as ‘managing waste and entrepreneurship’ through his practical experience. 8.The company offers an attractive compensation to casual garbage collectors who bring garbage to the company. I was told that some of them earn almost equivalent to some top bureaucrats by disposing waste to Greener Way. The company was awarded the Global Environment Entrepreneur of the Year, an international entrepreneurship competition held in the UK in 2013 by the Prince’s Youth Business Internationals. I wish Karma and the team a continued success as you endeavour to strengthen your business.
