GREETINGS ON REPUBLIC DAY, 2015 The Indian Republic Day is celebrated every year on 26th January. The main event is celebrated at New Delhi where there is a colorful parade at which the President of India is given a salute by the marching columns. There are functions in all state capitals. An additional attraction in New Delhi is a series of poetic meets where poems in various languages are recited by invited poets. On 26 January many years ago, I was visiting my wifes cousin brother at Unnao, a medium size city near Kanpur. He took me on a round of the local park where they were putting up tents etc. to organise a mushaira. I said that I am a SHAYAR from ND and volunteered to recite my SHER. The organisers smiled with irony and said that many Urdu poets of all India fame were expected and they could not accommodate me in the evening event. I gave them my best wishes for the success of the evening event and we returned home which was close to the venue. It was a cold evening and i snuggled into the warm bed with a cup of tea and gossiped..with the host family. We could hear on the loudspeakers the going-ons in the nearby park It seemed that the invited India-fame poeta had failed to turn up. The organisers were calling on the public address system Jo Shayar Saheb Dilli se tashrieef laaye haiyn, unse guzarish hay ki agar wo amari awaaz sunn rahe hon toh yahaan aa jaayen. Hum sab unka kalaam sun-na chahte haiyn. . (The poet who has come from Delhi is requested to join us here on the stage, if he is listening to this announcement. We all want to hear his poems.) My relatives said to me: Jija Ji, ye log aapko bulaa rahe haiyn. (They are calling you, brother in law.)........... But I did not want to stir out of the warm bed in the cold evening. hahaha .................... I am posting below a popular Qawwali for your enjoyment.....
