GROWING An old preacher captured the essence of the Christians life and marriage. He said, Maybe I aint what I ought to be, but praise God, I aint what I used to be, and I aint what Im going to be. After conversion, our experience in Christ matures us as persons, as family members, and most importantly, as children of God. We cannot grow into the Kingdom of Christ; we must be born into it by the new birth through Jesus Christ. However, after we have been born into the Kingdom, we still need to do a lot of growing. We are not perfect overnight. If our family life is not what it ought to be, rather than being discouraged, we should remember that it isnt what it used to be (before Christ came in), and it isnt what its going to be. The principle of growth really should not surprise us. Jesus talked about it all the time. In His vivid word pictures describing Himself and the Kingdom, He uses the metaphors of seed, leaven, and salt. Note that each of these, though tiny, grows into great influence. A small amount of salt seasons a whole meal. A little leaven raises a whole loaf. A seed, though ever so tiny, grows into a full-sized plant. They start small but grow big. We must not be discouraged with how little our life or love seems, for we will grow in Christ. The power is in the seed, not in ourselves. Peter said: As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.
