GSA Structural Geology and Tectonics Division 2014 OPA and CCA Awardees On behalf of the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division Management Board, it gives me tremendous pleasure to announce the Divisions 2014 awards for Outstanding Publication (OPA) and Career Contribution (CCA): 2014 Career Contribution Award: Professor Darrel Cowan of the University of Washington is this years recipient. Darrel was nominated for his contributions towards understanding of fault zone structural development, regional tectonic evolution of the North American Cordillera, and his work on accretionary wedge and melange development. The CCA Committee and the Division selected Darrel Cowan based on the overall impact he has had on the science of structural geology and tectonics, the breadth of the topics he has tackled, and the vision he displayed in pursuing problems long before they became mainstream. 2014 Outstanding Publication Award: Tarduno, J.A., R.A. Duncan, D.W. Scholl, R.D. Cottrell, B. Steinberger, T. Thordarson, B.C. Kerr, C.R. Neal, F.A. Frey, M. Torii and C. Carvallo, The Emperor Seamounts: Southward motion of the Hawaiian Hotspot plume in Earth’s mantle, Science, 301, 1064-1069, 2003. The OPA Committee and Division selected Professor Tardunos paper because of its wide-ranging implications for understanding plate motions, mantle flow, and the hot spot reference frame. The paper is unique in that it challenged the way that we perceive long-standing notions about how aspects of plate tectonics work. The nomination and support letters emphasized the clarity and simplicity of the analysis. Please join us at our Divisions Annual Reception, Awards, and Business Meeting, which will be held on Tuesday evening 21 October 2014 during the GSA Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.
