GSC December Graduates Receive Their Diplomas; Heffelfinger Gives Keynote Address Glenville State College’s first full winter commencement ceremony took place on Saturday, December 13, 2014. The graduates, officially part of the Class of 2015, completed requirements for an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in a variety of academic areas including business, criminal justice, teacher education, and natural resource management among others. The grads were made up of approximately 90 students who completed their degree requirements in July and December 2014. The students come from several counties throughout West Virginia as well as seven other states (California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Tennessee, and Virginia). Charleston-area businessman Richard Heffelfinger delivered the keynote address and was awarded an honorary doctorate of public service from Glenville State College. The honorary degree is one of higher education’s most significant accolades and it serves the dual purpose of recognizing extraordinary individuals and inspiring graduating students. It is awarded to distinguished individuals who merit special recognition for achievement and distinction. Heffelfinger serves as the Executive Vice President at Rubin Resources and is the chairman of GSC’s Board of Governors. He is also a Glenville State College graduate from the Class of 1980. Heffelfinger reflected on his own time at GSC and offered the graduates some advice. “Remember to dream and take an active role in your dreams. Don’t just hope things happen; make them happen. Never be afraid to ask for help. Most people are willing to help you if you truly want it. And I don’t think we can say this enough – congratulations on completing your degree,“ said Heffelfinger. Glenville State College President Dr. Peter Barr concluded the ceremony with these sentiments, “Today, the Class of 2015 celebrates the passage from being a Pioneer on campus to being a Pioneer on larger stages across the state and the nation. Each of you has become a vital member of the Glenville State College family – your family. You should leave this occasion proudly and ready to take your places in the world.“ Spring semester classes at GSC will begin on Monday, January 12, 2015.
