GTA to start its ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’ from Oct 28 Darjeeling 18 Oct 2014: The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration intends to initiate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’ across the hills from October 28. The day coincides with the birth anniversary of famed social worker Sister Nivedita. Although the programme is yet to take off in the rest of West Bengal, the BJP has already started it in the plains of Siliguri since October 2. GTA chief executive and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung has said, “We want to be the first district in Bengal to start the campaign. This initiative by PM Modi is commendable and we must be a part of it. Besides, Darjeeling is a tourist destination and such a campaign will go a long way in attracting visitors.” The Swach Bharat Abhiyan drive has failed to pick up gear in the rest of the state partly because of the rivalry between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. But as the GJM is an ally of the saffron front, its decision to kick-start the campaign reflects the bonhomie the two sides share. On October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Modi made an announcement in making all states of the country clean by 2019. Following this announcement, some states have already started the initiative. In Darjeeling, the campaign will start on October 28 and will be led by Gurung and Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia from the Chowk Bazaar area of town. The two sub-divisions of Kurseong and Kalimpong will also follow suit on the same day. To ensure the campaign becomes a success, the GTA chief executive has asked all Sabhasads, municipal chairmen and commissioners, principals of schools and colleges and various associations to participate in the programme. “We must give at least 100 hours in a year or 2 hours in a week to this Abhiyan. Doing so will enable us to keep our surroundings clean which is good for all of us. I appeal to all the people of the hills to cooperate and support the programme and ensure its success,” said Gurung. (EOIC)
