GTLF COUNTDOWN No. 4. Continuing our meandering progress through the roster of writers at this years George Town Literary Festival, it will be a pleasure to welcome one of Malaysias new young talents, Shivani Sivagurunathan. Her short stories have appeared in Fixi anthologies like Love In Penang and KL Noir: Red. But its her own collection, Wildlife on Coal Island- short stories by Shivani Sivagurunathan that best shows off her creative voice. Coal Island is where place and character define the trajectory of the stories, peopled with unusual characters: an ageing Chinese opera singer and her pet monkey; a self-proclaimed psychic who sees kingfishers in the sky; a murderer who finds worldly wisdom in a wandering tapir; an ex-colonial plantation overseer, battling with the literal and lateral python of his past.
