GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014) mints Marvel Studios as the Starbucks or Apple Computer of Hollywood. The subsidiary of Disney not only makes good products (live action adaptations of their comic book franchises), but brings considerable expertise to make the customers experience a happy one, like McDonalds did in the 1970s. This all sounds like faint praise, but if it was easy, every filmmaker in the world would be doing it. From an Earthbound prologue in 1988 that leaps to the other end of the galaxy, the movie is a terrific screwball comedy, with quick-witted dialogue and inventive sight gags. The special effects are fantastic, bringing a talking racoon and a walking tree to life. Why a talking racoon or walking tree, I have no clue, and as in all of Marvels products, I couldnt tell you who the villains are or what they want (orbs and crystals the destruction of planets, yawn). But the movie made me laugh, as well as gasp. Its cast close to perfection; Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper (voice) and Vin Diesel (voice) bring the sensibility needed to keep this light-footed and fancy free, which unlike STAR TREK, the material is, was and always intended be. Directed by James Gunn, from a screenplay by Nicole Perlman that was adapted as a labor of love and then rewritten by Gunn, who will never have to look for work again.
