GULFPORT, Miss. – Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74 decommissioned in a ceremony July 25 on board Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport. The battalion’s decommissioning is part of a Naval Construction Force restructuring plan initiated almost three years ago. The restructuring plan called for the decommissioning of NMCB 7 and 74, the merger and renaming of Naval Construction Regiment (NCR) 25 and 20th Seabee Readiness Group (SRG), making a new organization named Naval Construction Group (NCG) 2. The 22nd NCR then aligned within NCG2 and assumed the roles and responsibilities of 25 NCR. The final phase of the restructuring plan will occur Oct. 1 when Reserve units, 7 NCR currently in Newport, RI, NMCB 14 currently in Jacksonville, Fla. and NMCB 27 currently in Chicopee, Mass., relocate to Gulfport. This is not the first time NMCB 74 has closed its doors. After its original commissioning May 4, 1943, the battalion was deactivated Oct. 31, 1945. Since they were recommissioned, Dec. 3, 1966, NMCB 74 has been in every major conflict involving the U.S. In addition, the battalion has deployed in support of humanitarian operations worldwide including disaster recovery efforts. Most recently, NMCB 74 returned from a six-month deployment that spanned across 29 locations in 22 countries.
