GUNNER SABOT TWO TANKS LEFT TANK FIRST… IDENTIFIED… UP… LASING… FIRE AND ADJUST… CREW CALIBER FIFTY… ON THE WAY… TARGET… UP… ON THE WAY… TARGET CEASE FIRE… LOADER LOAD HEAT That might seem unintelligible but (if memory serves) fellow armor veterans will recognize it as a tank crew fire command. That whole uppercase exchange should take no more than fifteen seconds, and a well-trained crew would be complete in far less time. Thanks to excellent training and equipment (in the 1980s US M60A3 tanks on the NATO front had thermal sights, gyro-stabilized sighting, laser range-finders and ballistic computers) we consistently hit targets well past two kilometers. I write this after seeing a trailer for the film FURY starring Brad Pitt. The chatter seemed realistic, even to a tanker who was in a turret four decades later. I am looking forward to the premiere.
