GUREZ, where Shina & Kohsur people come together DARD SHIN - TopicsExpress

GUREZ, where Shina & Kohsur people come together DARD SHIN PEOPLE OF GUREZ Gurez is also home to about 30,000 Shina speakers. These are actually know as Dard Shins in Kashmir. An outsider will obviously not be able to distinguish between Koshur and Shinas of Gurez, but since I know quite a lot about GB, I am absolutely sure in saying that these Dard Shins of Gurez valley are actually close cousins of Gilgiti people of GB. The men of Dard Shinas are almost identically dressed to those from Gilgit region, plus these are also Shina speakers. I also found it interesting as to why these people are called Dard Shins. It seems that since Shina is a Dardic language, the word Dard must have got associated with these Shina speakers. Although, interestingly both Shina and Koshur are actually part of Dardic languages ( check Dardic languages: wikipedia). Sadly Koshur people do not consider Dard Shins as civilized people. They are considered junglee or uncivilized by my Koshur community just as Koshur people consider Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities that lives on mountains of Kashmir valley as uncivilized. Koshur and Dard Shins dont live together and have separate settlements.
