GURU PURNIMA Today is Guru Purnima, the first full moon in July. It is a sacred day on which we celebrate our teachers. For us that is Pattabhi and Sharath Jois. In Sanskrit Gu means darkness and Ru denotes the remover of darkness. Essentially a Guru is one who helps to remove the darkness of our ignorance and brings clear seeing and the ability to cultivate and share unconditional love. It is not easy having a Guru or following a tradition (parampara) as the blog post below explains, it frees as it binds. Even now with a new baby the responsibility of practice and teaching, while bringing much lightness also weighs somewhat heavy. To be entrusted a tradition to share, and to dedicate oneself to a Guru such as Pattabhi Jois or Sharath, is no small thing. But for those who venture down this path you may find that a the dispelling of darkness is a pathway to a deeper happiness and purpose in your life. Guru Purnima is also the day on which we celebrate our teachers birthday. Sri K Pattabhi Jois passed away on May 18th 2009. His legacy lives on through all of the Ashtanga Yoga practitioners & teachers he inspired, and we feel blessed to have studied with him and to have been give his permission to teach the Ashtanga Yoga system. We miss him dearly.
