GUY SCOTT IS PRESIDENT REPUBLICAN Vice President, Dr Guy Scott was this morning confirmed by a full Cabinet meeting to assume the powers of President of the Republic of Zambia. The meeting was called at State House in Lusaka following the announcement of the death of President Michael Chilufya Sata in London, UK last night. Mr Sata left for a medical check-up on 20 October 2014. When he left, Mr Sata had appointed Defence minister Edgar Lungu to act as President of Zambia. Mr Lungu was also Minister of Justice, appointed a few months ago when Mr Sata fired Mr Wynter Kabimba. Mr Lungu is also the Secretary General of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF). Speculation was rife across the country this morning over who would act as President of the country for the 90 days within which presidential by-elections must be held. Many Zambians disagree n the interpretation of the constitution, with confusing clauses about ones parentage as a prerequisite for one to stand for election to the office of President. However, many legal minds have dismissed as frivolous suggestions that the constitution bars Dr Scott, of Scottish heritage, from acting as President. The Cabinet meeting that took place this morning at State House has seemingly laid that argument to rest as Dr Scott was confirmed President of Zambia for the next 90 days, as per constitutional requirement.
