GZU signs MOA with ZNFPC Great Zimbabwe University signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) on 20 October 2014 to promote research in, and effective dissemination of information on, reproductive health. The MOA was signed by the Great Zimbabwe University Registrar, Ms Sinikiwe Tirivanhu and ZNFPC Provincial Manager for Masvingo Mr Abyssinia Peter Vhoko. It is designed to bolster the dissemination of reproductive health information by ensuring that literature and other forms of publicity in reproductive health matters are disseminated in the languages of the people and in pragmatic way that respects values of different cultural groups in Zimbabwe. “Great Zimbabwe University is the centre of culture and heritage in Zimbabwe and indeed the biggest centre for research and teaching of our languages and cultures in the country … This makes the university an important partner in matters that involve society and cultural development such as reproductive health,” Ms Tirivanhu said. She said GZU is an appropriate partner for ZNFPC in terms of translation and dissemination of culture specific reproductive health information as it is a centre of translation and interpreting studies. The University trains court interpreters and other translators. The University has also trained translators who have in the past translated ZNFPC material and made it easy for rural XiChangana people to access ZNFPC reproductive health literature. Ms Tirivanhu said while the partnership is more visible in the Department of African Languages in the Faculty of Arts, all Faculties have a keen interest in the relationship with ZNFPC as the MOA will open a window of interaction at the level of research. She said the MOA opens the door for GZU students to do their work-related learning with ZNFPC. Mr Vhoko said ZNFPC was delighted to partner with GZU as it is the centre of excellence for research and teaching of local languages in the country. He hailed the MOA as a pacesetting achievement for ZNFPC Masvingo region as it was the first time that such an arrangement has been made in the country. “The signing of today’s memorandum of agreement with GZU is a demonstration of our commitment towards working with relevant partners in the promotion of reproductive health and can only be to the benefit of people in Masvingo province and Zimbabwe as a whole,” said Mr Vhoko.
