Gabon has lost one-third of its forest elephants in the last 10 - TopicsExpress

Gabon has lost one-third of its forest elephants in the last 10 years. Its president is now threatening to cut off Chinese contracts unless that nation cracks down seriously on its traditional consumption of ivory. He is willing to risk Chinese aid to Africa to save his countrys greatest animal from mass killings. I think he deserves big respect and credit for this bold move (if he sees it through). If all presidents of African elephant-range states were to do the same, the negative economic impact on China would be too huge to ignore - they would be forced to take action, perhaps even to close their carving factories and impose a ban. Tragically however countries like Kenya and Tanzania dont seem to be as concerned about their elephants, and corruption rules the day - poaching ringleaders are well-known to both presidents .. in Kenya two of the biggest ringleaders of the poaching network are not only known but given protection by the state.
