Galatians 2:17 “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not!” Paul launches into a somewhat deep theological debate. Gentiles were being forced to live like Jews in order to be acceptable to Jews. Behind this social crisis, however, a more fundamental theological issue was at stake: Is the truth of the gospel or is the law the basis for determining fellowship between Jewish and Gentile Christians? Paul addresses this fundamental issue raised by the social crisis in the church of Antioch and the churches in Galatia. Paul summarizes the central point of disagreement in the dispute between himself and those who forced the Jewish Christians to separate from Gentile Christians. His summary of his opponents accusations against him consists of two premises and a conclusion. “If we seek to be justified in Christ,” and yet living as a sinner it’s as if we’re saying Christ approves of our sin. The second part of this is identifying Christ with promoting sin, making Christ a “minister of sin.” Of course Paul quickly says no. The end result is the calling of Christians to live after the life of Christ. Prayer: Dear God, keep me from living as if I’m promoting anything other than a right relationship with You, through Jesus Christ. Lead me to live in holiness. In Jesus Name.
