Galatians 6:12-13 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. In this time period, the beginning of the Church, there was much debate over whether a person first had to become a Jew and follow certain aspects of the Old Law, in order to become a Christian. Specifically, it appears as though circumcision was a major issue. If you read Pauls letters, you will find several places where he makes it clear that outward things of the body are not what being a Christian is all about. So why did people want others to be circumcised so badly? It seems that, since the beginning of the Christian Era, and likely even longer, people have been trying to tell other people the way in which they should express their saved state. Now, certainly, there are things spelled out for us in the Bible that are non-negotiable. Love one another. Do good. Keep yourself from the sin and the works of the flesh, among others. But these never seem to be good enough for some people. They always want to put just a little bit more on our shoulders than The Lord ever intended. And why do you think that is? This passage spells it out for us. The people that think that way are not simply trying to be helpful. They are not simply trying to make sure that you are the best follower of Christ that you can be. No, they are doing it so that they can make a good showing and be able to boast about what you do. Instead of concentrating on their own walk with God, they want to put all of their thought and effort into making sure that you do things their way. Not, necessarily, Gods way, but their way. Some things never change. So concentrate on the things that The Lord has laid on us through the pages of His Holy Word. Those who would stir up dissent are going to do their thing. Dont let them stop you from doing yours. ~Kevin Numbers 6:24-26 Romans 8:38-39.
