Galilee Primary School is one of the schools served by His Hands for Kenya. When asked to talk about the beginnings of Galilee Primary school and the children who attend the Director, Fanuel Okwaro, had this to say. “Galilee Primary School is non-formal school in Soweto, one of the many slums in Nairobi, Kenya. It provides an essential education for approximately 1100 children whose families cannot afford the normal state-run or private schools. The school was started in 1997 by Fanuel Okwaro, who himself had gone through a non–formal primary education and who was lucky enough to be sponsored through high school. After completing his secondary education, he went back to teach as a volunteer at his former primary school. It was during this time that God showed Fanuel another place where there were many needs and what started as a simple walk in the Soweto slums turned out to be a vision from which the school started. He and his friends were so touched by number of children who were not in school that they decided to make a difference in these children’s lives. And so the school began. Most of the children in the school come from very poor backgrounds. These include orphans, the destitute, street children and some who have been abandoned by their parents due to economic constrains. Galilee Primary School embraces all children at risk and strives to give them at least a basic education. The children are also counselled and prayed with, asking God to intervene in their hardships. The school’s aim is to mold the children and give them hope for the future”. A gift of $12.50 a month enables a child to attend Galilee Primary, receive an education and improve his quality of life, children like Isaac, age seven, who lives with his grandmother and one brother or Lesa, age ten, who lives with her grandfather and three siblings. Children who dream of becoming teachers, doctors, pilots, children whose dreams won’t come true unless someone like you cares an awful lot. When you sponsor a child at Galilee Primary school you will receive three letters a year and your child’s end of term marks. You may write to your child and send small parcels or shop at the online store. You will become a friend and a mentor to a child in need, a source of hope and encouragement.
