Gallerí Gestur/Gallery Guest Farandgallerí/Touring Gallery 25/06/2013 – 28/07/2013 Caroline Berridge The Altar of Culture, 2013 Mixed media on paper Artist Caroline Berridge is a highly qualified artist who has acquired the Advanced GNVQ in Art and Design from Leeds College of Art and Design as well as a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Design from Batley School of Art and Design. She has exhibited at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester Berridge´s work is based on photographs which she took at Pinggg…K! earlier this year. From the photographs she has made a series of observations that stylistically sit between illustration and fine art that comments on society. An interest in people fused with a personal Christian faith lies behind this series of portraits that ask us a demanding question: Do we worship on the altar of culture? Based on this question the work deals with the hypothesis that culture and art are replacing the role of faith in our society. With a deep love and respect for poetry and painting and the people who create it, Berridge is searching for the archetypal elements of these two artistic environments. Can the world of painting and poetry guide us in how to live and can it reveal something about the meaning of life to us? Can cultural and artistic exploration be a substitute for a personal faith or does in merely illustrate our ideas about faith? This exhibition is brought to you by Dr Magnus Gestsson PhD, Gallerist, Curator, Performance Artist and Art Consultant.
