Galveston Island Railroad Museum Boy Scout Railroading Merit Badge Class The Galveston Island Railroad Museum is proud to announce our new certified Merit Badge instructor, Mr. Larry Highley. Larry has years of experience with the Boy Scout Association and is anxious to help your troop not only learn about the wonders of Railroading but also earn their Merit Badge! Boy Scout Railroading Merit Badge Classes are available upon request. Attendance of ten or more are required for scheduling a class, however, your Scout’s name can be added to a “will call” list and you will be notified when a class has been scheduled. The Boy Scout Railroading Merit Badge course is divided into sections. For example, one section is an “Operation Lifesaver” presentation concerning safety around railroads and rail cars. Another section allows the Scouts to visit the cab of a steam locomotive and in an operating diesel locomotive. Another section compares several different types of railcars in the Museum’s collection. As with all Merit Badge classes, Scouts should have purchased the handbook and have read it before attending the class. To obtain the Merit Badge, Scouts must fulfill certain requirements listed in the back of the hand book. The blue card should be provided by the Scout’s Troop Leader to each Scout and brought to the class for a signature from our instructor upon completion of the class. Classes cost $30 per Scout which includes a boxed lunch from our Whistle Stop Café. Chaperones admission is $6. Classes include a train ride aboard the “Harborside Express”. Classes are approximately 4 hours long with a break for lunch. To secure your reservation, please call Sandi at (409) 765-5700.
