Gamaliel made many statements in his teaching life but none as well remembered as in Acts 5: 34-42. It is a short account of Gamaliel arguing before the Sanhedrin that if Jesus and His cause is not of God, it and His followers will quickly disappear as did all of the other movements. I quote, “For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them; you may even find yourselves fighting against God.” These are words I will take to prayer today. As I look at my life and you at yours what do I see? If God were to ask me now, “Are your endeavors with or against God,” what would we answer? As we look at our words are we proud of them, do they come from a place of pride, concern, caring, judgment or loving kindness? Are my actions, my involvements in work, community, family, of a Godly heart? I believe the passage from Acts gives me pause. How do you feel, have you any suggestions or reflections to share? -- Msgr. John Barry
