Gambian authorities have announced an immediate ban on airline flights emanating from Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia; three countries in West Africa that have reported cases of the Ebola virus over the past few weeks. A letter signed by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport, A. O. Camara dated April 10, 2014, stated: “I am directed to inform you that with immediate effect and until further notice, airlines serving Banjul and the sub-region are not to pick up passengers in Freetown, Monrovia, and Conakry as inbound passengers to Banjul”. The letter was sent to the civil aviation and airport authorities of the three countries as well as four airlines serving the route: Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Gambia Bird, and Arik Airlines. On April 14, the Deputy Director General of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, Ms. Catherine Nying, told Emboff that airlines operating in the region that wished to continue to land in Banjul would have to overfly the three capitals named in the directive
