Game on Tomorrow for the lady Mustangs!!! Lady Mustangs set sights on 4A, Region III title By BRANDON C. WILLIAMS | Posted: Sunday, April 6, 2014 12:25 am FRIENDSWOOD – As long as they keep advancing, the “how” in the Lady Mustangs’ path to reaching the girls soccer state finals is secondary. Coach Laura Peter’s squad has added the “thrill” in thrilling in the last two games, needing penalty kicks to move past Stratford, while a pair of goals from Selina Vickery helped Friendswood fend off Texas City in overtime. Those dramatics have led them to a date against Ridge Point in the 4A, Region III finals at Pearland at 7 p.m. Tuesday, moving one step closer to Austin. Still, Peter knows there is room for improvement. “We felt like we kind of played sloppy in the back,” Peter said of Thursday’s win against Texas City. “We want to clean up our game in the back and finish those chances. We’ve created a few chances, but we’re not getting them in.” At least in the first half, where the Lady Mustangs have been unable to take advantage of their opportunities. Friends-wood attacked aggressively in the last two matches, yet were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Persistence is perhaps the best word to describe their offense in the last two matches. “We just have to go out there and keep playing,” Vickery said. Her goal with 4:05 left in regulation tied the match against Texas City then she scored the go-ahead goal with 28 seconds left in the first overtime session. “We just have to go out and play our game.” Having goalie Klaryssa Heussman on top of her game has also helped the Lady Mustangs. Heussman blanked the Lady Stingarees in both the second half and overtime, as the potential district player of the year will enter Tuesday with 15 shutouts to her credit. Vickery, who leads the team in goals, has given the team an offensive spark as well, along with forward Taylor Rue, who leads the Lady Mustangs in scoring. “Between the two of them, you have to count on them to put the ball in the net,” Petersaid.
