Gani Kayode Balogun Jr wrote!! THE HEN AND THE GUINEA FOWL I usually stay away from the Ekiti drama, not only because I have close and personal relationship with top functionaries on both sides, but because I had, during the course of researching into the apparent disconnect between the Fayemi administration and the then inevitability of a Fayose victory, confirmed the old truism that all politics are local, and in this case, ego driven personal. I was willing to overlook the showmanship and dumbing down of serious state policies, and the implication of the Fayose victory on the national political dynamics. I was even willing to concede that by and large, the peoples will was reflected in the outcome. But what cannot be wished away is Mr Fayoses reluctance, or is it inability, to transit from being a candidate to being a governor. His behavior and public utterances since he assumed office are most unbecoming. His public show of handling out rice and chicken would have been a PR coup, if there was an armed conflict, leading to internal displacement, natural disaster or famine, but not in peacetime in a state being governed by a party at the center. With benefit of hindsight, I am beginning to see that the outcome was more of a rejection of perceived high handedness of Fayemi than the promise of a repetant, more matured Fayose. Reminds me of the old Ibadan adage about the hen and the guinea fowl. You know, the one about the hen that laid twenty eggs and hatched twenty chicks, and people said what was the big deal. Then the hen laid thirty and hatched thirty, but the people were still unimpressed. So they sold the hen and bought a guinea fowl, which promptly laid six eggs and hatched only one. I only pray that the Ekiti people have not sold the hen to buy a guinea fowl. But then, only time will tell. My ten kobo.
