Ganjam Loss Rs.3432 Cr. Chatrapur : 21/October/2013 With severe cyclone Phailin hitting Ganjam badly the loss of the district is pegged at Rs.3432 crore, which is highest in the state as the state government asked for at Rs.4242 crore central assistance. More than 37 lakh people were affected with Nine lakh families need immediate rehabilitation. More than 2.38 lakh houses left in damaged condition and 2.68 lakh hectare Under this backdrop district Administration headed by Krishan Kumar, Collector has taken multi pronged approach to face the situation. And the first step in this regard District Administration decided to set up a toll free number (1800 345 1077)for complaint and grievance reddressal monitoring mechanism. Anybody can ring up this number 24X7 for any sorts of complaints and its redressal. While the resources available with Government is not much to handle such a Herculean situation, support of the NGOs, Corporate House and various organizations are taken into confidence. And with a hyperactive Collector support is pouring in, said a senior officer in the Ganjam District Administration. So taking the lead U N Behera, Additional Chief Secretary Finance, who is leading the NGO coordination in the state rushed to Ganjam to take stock of the situation. A well designed plan was rolled out in the meeting, where a large number of NGOs participated and volunteered to take up assignments. NGOs role in providing health care, trauma support, providing solar lanterns, water and sanitation was stressed and most of them agreed to take up the responsibilities. NDMA, OXFAM, PREM, CARE, HELPAGE and various others extended their support for the people and categorical responsibilities were worked out so that overlap will not be there, said the officer. Similarly, support of the Corporate Sector has taken in a big way in the district for safe drinking water supply, which is the utmost need of the hour. Major Industrial Houses like Tata Steel, JSPL, ESSEL Mining, Adani Group, Arya Steel, IRE and others participated in the process of dialogue for extending support. At least One Lakh families will be provided food support and drinking water supply will be done through sintex type fiber tanks mounted over tractors or such types of vehicles, which will move in villages. While the power restoration job is taken on war footing mode, but it will take some more time. So supply of solar lanterns have been planned through the support of Corporate Sector, said an officer.
