Gao gives one-word monotone answers interspersed with unintelligible gibberish, and is unable to understand what is being said to him most of the time. Whatever he endured during his last three years of incarceration would appear to have robbed him of his ability to communicate, and perhaps even his senses. In a horribly poetic development, the Communist Party have taken away the voice of their most stridently vocal critic..... Gao Zhisheng often seemed like an ideal candidate for the Chinese presidency: a principled man of remarkable integrity and humility, possessed of articulacy, vision and wide-ranging influence; the best person to lead a progressive new China in the 21st century. Perhaps envisioning this, the leaders of the Communist Party have broken him more severely than any of Chinas many other dissenters.
