Garang De Mabior Arrested For Attempting to Assassinate Kiir Category: Featured Published on Wednesday, 27 August 2014 12:11 Written by admin Hits: 2 Garang Mabior Found with 9MM pistol containing 6 bullets Accuses him of destroying father’s legacy Staff writer The son to the late Hero and the founding member of the SPLM/A, Mabior Garang De Mabior is under arrest in Ethiopian capital Addis Abba for attempting to assassinate President Salva Kiir Mayardit, an impeccable source has told this newspaper. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, when Mabior Garang was found in possession with a loaded 9MM pistol containing 6 bullets at the reception of the hotel in which the President was. He was immediately arrested by Ethiopian security personnel protecting the IGAD heads of state. After the Ethiopian security personnel disarmed him, he was taken to a Central Prison in Addis Ababa where he was interrogated for his behavior. Mabior reportedly said he simply wanted to face president Kiir for destroying his father’s legacy. This statement established a motive of an assassination attempt and his case is being treated as a criminal case pending more investigation as of Tuesday. The Ethiopian authorities are reportedly said to be serious with the issue and are in to investigate the entire leadership of the SPLM-IO to uncover whether Mabior Garang acted alone or conspired with the leadership of Riek Machar to kill President Kiir. Mabior Garang is currently the Deputy Spokesperson for the rebels and the second chief negotiator for the opposition. The older son to the late John Garang declared his opposition to the government in August 31, 2012 during his interview with McClatchy Newspapers while in Nairobi. He accused those who took power after the death of his father, guerrilla leader John Garang, in a 2005 helicopter crash of pulling a posthumous coup, and he urged others to speak out in opposition. My father is a fuel by which these people have been running, but they have actually gone against (him). They’ve done the opposite of what he was saying and what he was trying to do, said the younger Garang. “I’m opposed to what’s happening. I don’t want to be guilty by association. In the interview, Garang offered a long list of grievances against the nation’s leaders, labeling them as authoritarian elite and part of a political culture that’s too comfortable with soliciting violence for power. However, when the conflict broke out in Dec, 2013 Mabior went public putting blame on Kiir as responsible for the fight. As pressure mounted on the two leaders to come for peace talks offered by IGAD in Addis Abba, Younger Garang was called up by Riek to be part of the negotiating team for the rebels. Yet Mabior looks not fit in the rebels’ movement as of late messages of their row with the rebels’ Spokesperson Gen. Lul Ruai where quoted throughout the social media and Lul is rumored to have aired words that hit the cord of Mabior. “The days when one man, his wife and two young sons would come, kill, hijack, own, deny, disregard, work tirelessly to distort or try to burry part of history made by fighters before him are long gone and consigned to history books.” Lul said.
