Garden Tip: Nutrients are leached out of the potting soil every time that you water. If you want maximum performance out of your patio pots and hanging baskets, keep them well fed. That will require at least weekly applications of water-soluble, high-nitrogen fertilizer. You might also want to add a timed-release fertilizer that will give you 60 to 90 days of sustained feeding. It’s important that you water your container plants deeply and thoroughly each time that you water. Allow water to run out the drain holes. That will keep mineral salts from accumulating to harmful levels in the soil mix. A water wand and water breaker (the ones you commonly see in nurseries) will be your best way of accomplishing this. Finally, one final “tip-ette” is that you never use the on-off valve on the water breaker to turn the water off for a prolonged period. Water pressure can cause it or the hose to break/rupture, and that can result in a great deal of wasted water.
