Garden Tour in Slayton Area on July 11 By David Bau, Murray County Master Gardener SLAYTON, Minn 6/26/2013 -- Murray County Master Gardeners are hosting a Summer Garden Tour in the Slayton area on July 11, 2013 from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. Several kinds of gardens, including shade, raised, flower, and vegetable, will be included in the tour. A rain date has been set for July 12; listen to KJOE Radio 106.1 FM for postponement announcements. Tickets and maps are available from all Murray County Master Gardeners, the University of Minnesota Extension Office in Murray County, First National Bank and Minnwest Bank in Slayton. Tickets will also be available for purchase at any of the garden sites during the tour on July 11. The tickets are $5.00, with proceeds going to community garden projects. Transportation is on your own; you may start the tour at any of the host sites. Refreshments will be served at Gaeland Priebe and Melodie Knutson’s home on 2829 Norwood Ave, Slayton. Murray County Master Gardeners are Ardis Andert, David Bau, Sally Berg, Karen Burch, Gaylene Chapman, Colleen Gengler, Mona Henkels, Betty Kassel, Marilyn Moger, Jan Scherbart, Kathy Schwartz, Patty White, and Beth Ann Winter. Tour hosts, addresses and short descriptions follow: Kent & Donna Johansen, 1415 US Hwy 59, Slayton –This home along Beaver Creek was built in 2008. Kent & Donna strive for low-maintanance landscaping, but are challenged by wildlife. Several flower gardens with rocks, shrubs, perennials and annuals enhance this beautiful home. Clayton & Karen Torbert, 1410 N Oak Ave, Slayton – Torberts are a retired couple who enjoy building and growing things. Their landscape includes a board walk, bell tower, fences, seating areas, raised garden, rock garden, straw bale gardening, and more! Linda Wilkison, 2458 King Ave, Slayton – Cozy and creative describes Linda’s yard! Paths and patios, baskets and blooms, and ground covers as interesting as the flower beds. Linda’s plants have memories and stories. Mark & Donna Schleisman, 2708 Maple Ave, Slayton – Beautiful older Slayton home with tasteful landscaping that includes flowers in tubs, barrels, baskets, and trees! Stewart Oberg, 2769 Oak Ave, Slayton – Perennials visible from every window in the house describes Stewart’s home. You’ll see a flowering sweet pea tree and Japanese lilacs in his yard. Gaeland Priebe & Melodie Knutson, 2829 Norwood Ave, Slayton – They created a “mountain” in their backyard! Many hours of planning and labor went into their waterfall; recycled concrete chunks were used. A botanical garden with walking paths, pergola, trellises, birdhouses, and wind chimes are just a few of the highlights of this yard. Al & Pam Clauson, 2903 Linden Ave, Slayton – Engelmann’s ivy covers the north and east sides of the Clauson’s century-old home. A new patio and sidewalks were last summer’s projects. You’ll find a raised bed vegetable garden in the backyard as well as many trees, shrubs, and flowers. Community Flower Beds, 2500 28th St & 3001 Maple Road, Slayton -- Murray County Master Gardeners created and maintain these perennial flower gardens. The flowers and bench in the garden near the Government Center were donated in memory of Lona Vos.
