Garden notes from June 16th. I cut back the other cotoneaster - TopicsExpress

Garden notes from June 16th. I cut back the other cotoneaster hard, along with the Mexican mock orange (choisya) and took some cuttings off the sitka spruce where it goes over the pathway. When I was carrying prunings up to the burn pile on the berm, I interrupted a young (non-native) fallow deer feeding. He was a young male and he give me a distinct "woof" sound like a dog before he ran away. I had never heard a sound like that from a deer before. He was beautiful with his characteristic spots. I also did a lot of weeding. Tip: if you plant hybrid columbine, be prepared to have it popping up everywhere. I try to keep it confined to a few spots. The native red columbine is still in flower and is beautiful (and it can spread anywhere it wants). I saw a lovely swallowtail butterfly and the hummingbirds are going crazy over my honeysuckle vines covered with nectar-laden flowers.
