Gardeners in a large section of the country got an unwelcome - TopicsExpress

Gardeners in a large section of the country got an unwelcome return of winter over the last few days. Many are wondering what effect this unusual cold weather will have on plants that have leafed out, have flower buds swelling, or are in bloom, or on those newly set out in the garden. Whether or not plants were damaged depends on the kind of plant, the degree to which the temperature dropped, and how long it stayed cold. While some plants may look pretty hard hit, if their leaf buds are uninjured they may leaf out again and do just fine. If flower buds on vulnerable plants like fruit trees and peonies got zapped, the plant itself may survive but the flower show or fruit crop you were looking forward to may not happen this year. For now, unless plants like tender annuals have been clearly killed by the cold, the best advice is to watch and wait. Give plants a chance to recover before doing any drastic pruning or removal -- you may be pleasantly surprised at their resiliency. And lets hope spring is finally here to stay!
