Gargunnock Main St was noted for its sheugh or open drain which ran down the steep part of the brae and collected roof rainwater and the occasional sink for transmission down to the burn. As a young road surveyor in 1966 I was given the task of replacing it with a drain and proper road gullies. The line of the old sheugh is now marked in cobbles. In the trench is Stuart Semple from Fintry, weilding the shovel a chap called Willie Chisholm from Kippen, I think. The first building on the left was at that time Elsie Boags shop. The building 2 down was at that time being converted into a combined shop and Post Office as Elsies had been condemned and Miss Philps Post Office, seen further down on the right hand side, was to be demolished, but neither were to last long in the face of competition from Brands supermarket further down where the cars are parked. Nowadays parked cars choke the street overnight and at weekends, but thats progress...isnt it?
