Gary Neville: Manchester United were awful and will be delighted to beat Southampton Former Manchester United great Gary Neville has claimed that the club will be “delighted” to have beaten Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s, after their “awful” performance went unpunished. The Red Devils recorded their fifth consecutive win as the Saints fell to their third consecutive defeat during what has been a tough run for them, but the losing side were more deserving victors than the eventual winners. United posed little threat going forward and Robin van Persie was clinical and took the few chances that came his way to fire his side into third place with a brace. “They’ll [United] be delighted with that because it was awful at times – it really was,” Neville said on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football. “United’s passing was laughable and when [Louis] Van Gaal watches it back I’m sure they’ll feel the same. But then Southampton were just as bad. They look shot of confidence. United will be delighted to sit third and think they will get better.” Reports: Liverpool join Man United in chase for Saints’ Nathaniel Clyne Van Persie’s double was enough to secure the three points for the Red Devils, despite Graziano Pelle ending his goal drought for the home side. They were lucky to take the win, having suffered yet another injury setback when Chris Smalling limped off early on, but they managed to hold on and snatch it through veteran forward Van Persie.
