Gary Neville believes that Manchester United fans have shown an impatience with Louis van Gaal’s methods this season. The Red Devils’ fans made the headlines on Saturday as they chanted “attack, attack, attack” and called for a switch to a 4-4-2 formation during the 2-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers. The chants inevitably led to suggestions that some United fans are unhappy with the Dutchman’s approach since taking over at Old Trafford last summer. However, former Manchester United defender Neville believes that it is more a question of impatience rather than genuine unhappiness amongst the Red Devils’ supporters. “It’s more impatience than unhappiness,” Neville said in his role as a pundit on Sky Sports on Monday night. “They haven’t been taking risks in the 3-5-2 system and in the first 57 minutes at QPR there were no goals, only five shots, four on target and 68 per cent possession. “Then, when they go to the back four, there’s less possession but goals, more shots and generally a far better performance from them in the last half hour. “It’s partly the system but it’s a mentality thing as well. I’m not a fan of 3-5-2, but when you play that, you end up with your centre-backs being the free men and that becomes a careful option, then it kicks into your mentality: ‘I’ve always got a safer pass’.” United’s 2-0 win at QPR on Saturday kept them in fourth place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. Their next league game is a home clash against Leicester City, where they will look to gain revenge for their shock 5-3 loss to the Tigers earlier in the season. Van Gaal’s side take on Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night.
