Gateway and St. Joseph’s qualify for 3x3 finals September 22, 2014, 9:53 pm After some thrilling encounters over the weekend, St. Joseph’s College and Gateway College qualified for the finals of the Carlton Cup 3x3 (three on three) championship to be worked off next weekend. There was very little margin for error during the knockout stages as from the quarter-final onwards all games except one were decided by either one point or two points. Gateway were trailing by one point in the semi-final against St. Benedict’s and a three pointer with three seconds to go sealed them a berth in the final. The final scores were 17-16. St. Joseph’s, meanwhile beat CIS (Kandy) 13-11 in another tough encounter. Three of the four quarter-finals went to the wire. St. Benedict’s had it relatively easy beating De Mazenod College 15-10. Their across town rivals De La Salle College went down fighting losing to CIS (Kandy) 15-14. Gateway beat Asian International School 14-13 while St. Joseph’s overcame Royal Institute 13-12. In the girls’ segment, meanwhile, Visakha Vidyalaya beat Ave Maria Convent 12-05 while Presbyterian Girls School ‘A’ beat their ‘B’ team 10-7.
