Gateways to Freedom Proverbs 6:23 “For sound advice is a beacon, good teaching is a light, moral discipline is a life path” Proverbs 6:23 (MSG). While we’re all aware of the value of godly advice, there are times in each of our lives that we simply don’t want to listen to it because it isn’t what we want to hear. This verse reminds us that good teaching isn’t just a light, it’s a life-path. When we choose to go down our own path, it often leads to more trouble and difficulties where we then become trapped by our own bad decisions. Oftentimes, trouble doesn’t so much find us as we find it by following the wrong path. And we put ourselves on the wrong path by not listening to sound advice and good teaching; instead, like Eve, we decide to go our own way, only to discover that death and destruction waits for us at the end of that dead-end, self-chosen path. You see, sound advice, good teaching, and moral discipline are not barriers that restrict us but gateways to freedom; they keep us on the path that avoids the pitfalls of all other paths—the path that leads to abundant and eternal life.
