Gauteng Police arrested a 45 year-old suspect in connection with a truck hijacking – the truck was recovered in an abandoned Roodepoort industrial site in the early hours of Monday 2 January.It is alleged that the truck, which was transporting television sets, was hijacked by about 10 suspects at gunpoint near Heidelberg the day before it was found.Police followed information from community members who spotted the truck parked in an abandoned location in Roodepoort. On arrival, a Somalian citizen was arrested on the scene while offloading the suspected stolen goods to another truck and more than eight of his accomplices escaped the arrest.During the investigation police recovered a jamming device, three vehicles (Isuzu Truck, Toyota Quantum and Corolla) all fitted with foreign registration plates, and 280 units of television sets.Police suspect that the recovered vehicles were involved in the hijacking and transportation of the goods. The suspect would face charges of hijacking, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods, including contravening the Electronic Communications Act, 2014.The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba applauded the prompt reaction that has led to the recovery of the hijacked items.
