Gazs Film Reviews So, Gravity swept up at both the Oscars and the Baftas. It won in almost every technical category, which, by definition, makes it technically the best film. However, that gong went to Twelve Years a Slave. Now, Twelve Years is a tremendous flick and a worthy winner of film’s greatest prize, but is that what we have been conditioned to think? The academy is legendary for promoting anything with strong political or historical relevance but it has unanimously snubbed anything regarded as science fiction. Katherine Bigelow’s Hurt Locker is a prime example of a film accredited purely on its political punch, rather than cinematic merit. Whereas, esteemed visionaries such as Stanley Kubrick and Ridley Scott have been shunned. For me, there are not enough superlatives to describe the groundbreaking work of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. Yet Steve McQueen’s Solomon Northup biopic only elaborates on old ground. So, was Twelve Years a worthy winner or should the Academy stop playing it so safe?
